407,000 votes in four key states made the difference for Obama

Jim Geraghty from the National Review takes a closer look at the numbers and uncovers some surprising statistics.  According to his analysis, the four key swing states which would have delivered victory for Team Romney were agonizingly close:

Florida: 73,858

Ohio: 103,481

Virginia: 115,910

Colorado: 113,099

Those four states, with a collective margin of, 406,348 for Obama, add up to 69 electoral votes. Had Romney won 407,000 or so additional votes in the right proportion in those states, he would have 275 electoral votes.

This shows in no uncertain terms, that this election was extremely close, and that President Obama appears to NOT have quite the mandate he thinks he has.  (Hat tip to Battleground Watch for the lead.)

Washington Times: Obama in trouble

According to a recent column publishes by the Washington Times, data coming out of the swing states is showing an increasingly difficult set of challenges for the President.

What stands out in the article was that Pennsylvania was considered a battleground state. Remember that Romney boldly predicted that they would surprise people in Pennsylvania. If the recent polling out is the state is accursed, then the Obama administration is really in serious trouble. Something tells me that while it may be close, it’s probably a small chance that Gov. Romney can pull out a win there.

But more importantly, there is a bigger issue are play. What does it say that a state that ia typically beyond reach, but is now suddenly in danger?  Certainly, the Romney campaign would probably be smart not to devote a huge amount of resources in the state, but it may force the Administration to invest/divert precious dollars over there.

Romney +7 in Florida [Not a Typo]

A poll out of Florida shows continued strength from Romney being into the final weeks of the campaign. A few days ago, the Suffolk University polling outfit, indicated that they were no longer polling in Florida, Virginia, or North Carolina. Many people received that information with skepticism. It would appear as though this report seems to back up their determination regarding at least one of those battleground states. (Florida)

Breaking: Suffolk stops polling in Virginia, North Carolina, and Florida — Predicts wins for Romney

Keith Backer over at Battleground Watch caught this encouraging snippet from Fox News:

Looks like Virginia, Florida, and North Carolina are “off the market” as it were. Suffolk Polling is reallocating their resources out of those states as they are likely solidly in Romney’s column:

In places like North Carolina, Virginia, and Florida, we’ve already painted those red.  We’re not polling any of those states again.  We’re focusing on the remaining states.”
